How does it work? The collecting of household waste ...

Latest news from the SIDEFAGE:

During the coming weeks the Sidéfage will distribute new shopping bags to the population of the Genevois.

These sacks with a volume of 40 litres made from recycled plastic should be used as:

  • Shopping bags by replacing the ordinary plastic bags distributed at the checkout. They show on one side advice how to buy intelligently in order to reduce the amount of refuse due to packaging material.
  • Sacks to collect recyclables to be carried to the green points like newspapers, magazines and wrapping. One side of the bag gives instructions how to do the sorting of household waste.

This will be collected :

Refuse in containers, regular bins and plastic sacks

This will not be collected :

  • Other than household waste, which has to be carried to the waste recycling centre
  • Refuse which should be carried to the "green points" for waste sorting

Attention! Refuse in garden bins (out of soft plastic) is not collected any more: they represent a hazard to the staff.

The CCG has organised the collecting of household waste on its territory since the 70s.

Today the collecting follows a policy of groups of containers:

The policy for groups of containers

This polici not only makes the collecting of household waste totally safe but also limits the number of stops of the collection truck therefore causing less nuisance for the population.

The containers:

Containers are exclusively for the collection of household waste, whether they belong to the CCG or are private. The containers disposed by the CCG are once a year disinfected by a specialised company.

The CCG supplies two types of communal containers: at places with dense housing (near to more than four habitations) and where there is at a place for a group of containers arranged on a public road.

  • Either a large container with a volume of 750 litres placed at a place for groups of containers
  • Or a smaller model for each house

Any household may use its own container if the container is brought to a place for groups of containers determined by the CCG.

In such a case the container has to be a standard model: any bins out of soft plastic or garden bins are not allowed.

If there is no place for groups of containers in your neighbourhood the household waste - if possible in standard bins - has to be placed at the kerbside the evening before the day of collection.

Technical equipment and vehicles:

The collecting is done with three teams on weekdays between 4:30a.m. and 11:30a.m. Since 2005 the CCG has owned 3 compactor trucks with a capacity of 17 m3 each, capable of carrying up to 11 tonnes of waste, plus one spare truck.

The processing of waste collected by the CCG:

After the collection the waste is transported to the loading platform of Etrembières where it is placed into special wagons to be transported by train to the incineration plant of the Sidéfage in Bellegarde where it is burned.

In 2005, 11 500 tonnes of waste were collected by the service of the CCG.
